How Kansas's Primary Election Works

Kansas uses a semi-closed primary election system. Registered Democrats and Republicans may vote only in their own party's primary. Unaffiliated voters may also participate by choosing to affiliate with either the Democratic or Republican Party at the polling place, allowing them to vote in that party's primary. Voters who are already affiliated with one major party cannot vote in another party's primary.

Kansas does not hold primary runoff elections. Candidates only need to receive a plurality of the vote to win their party's nomination, meaning the candidate with the most votes advances to the November general election even if they do not receive an outright majority.
