How Connecticut's Primary Election Works

Connecticut uses a closed primary election system. Voters must be registered members of a political party to participate in that party's primary. Unaffiliated voters cannot vote in a Democratic or Republican primary unless they register with that party by the applicable deadline, and voters registered with one party cannot vote in another party's primary.

Connecticut does not hold primary runoff elections. Candidates only need to receive a plurality of the vote to win their party's nomination, meaning the candidate with the most votes advances to the November general election even if they do not receive an outright majority.
