How Alaska's Primary Election Works

Alaska uses a nonpartisan Top Four primary election system. All candidates for an office appear on the same ballot regardless of political affiliation, and all registered voters may participate regardless of party. Voters select one candidate in each race, and the four candidates who receive the most votes advance to the general election.

Alaska's primary does not nominate candidates on behalf of political parties. The top four candidates advance regardless of party affiliation, meaning multiple candidates from the same party may advance to the general election. If four or fewer candidates are running for an office, all of them advance.
