Today are the Florida primaries and here is what you need to know about today's results.
Florida is known for its swift vote-counting process, often delivering results before 10 PM, barring extremely close races. With one of the most efficient systems in the nation, Florida sets the gold standard for election night reporting. Unlike many other states, you won’t have to wait long to see the results.
Today’s elections in Florida may not feature many headline-grabbing contests, but a few races are worth keeping an eye on. At the top of the ticket is Senator Rick Scott's primary. While he faces an opponent in Keith Gross, who has managed to raise and spend over $2.5 million, Scott is expected to easily secure renomination and re-election.
In the House, there are four potentially interesting races involving incumbents. The most notable is the next stop on Kevin McCarthy's "revenge tour" in FL-01, where Matt Gaetz faces a more serious challenger this cycle. Although Gaetz secured 70% of the vote in 2022, this time around he’s likely to land somewhere between 65-75%. Next, FL-07 offers a glimpse into the baseline support for incumbent Cory Mills, whose opponent is only notable for sharing a name with the Speaker of the House. In FL-11, Rep. Daniel Webster, who breathed a sigh of relief after Trump endorsed him, may still face some opposition within the district. Finally, in FL-26, Mario Diaz-Balart is up against a challenger, though this race isn’t expected to be particularly close.
For open House seats, two races stand out. FL-09, a potentially competitive district, has three Republicans vying for the nomination to challenge Democrat Darren Soto. Although Soto held the seat in 2022, the outcome of the Republican primary could signal how much attention Democrats will need to divert to this district. In FL-08, while Mike Haridopolos is the favorite to win, the margin of victory could be telling. We also have FL-10 in which Willie J. Montague is running to be the GOP nominee against Maxwell Frost.
Several local contests also merit attention. In the state House, HD-33 and HD-35 are worth watching. HD-33 is expected to remain a Republican stronghold, so the primary results will indicate whether there’s an upgrade in representation. In HD-35, Erika Booth, who lost a special election due to low GOP turnout, is running for a rematch, but faces another Republican challenger.
Seminole County Committeewoman Linda Trocine has a challenger, and this could be pivotal. As under Linda the Seminole County GOP has held its own very well, changing Committeewoman could jeopardize this. In the state Senate, SD-25 features our endorsed candidate Jon Arguello, while in Lake County, the race for County Commissioner between Anthony Sabatini and incumbent Doug Shields is heating up. Sabatini’s success could position him for another congressional bid in 2026, as Lake County is a significant part of FL-11.
While there are a few other races that might pique interest, overall, expect lower turnout and a relatively uneventful election night in Florida.
