How the Illinois 2026 Primary Election Works
Illinois uses a closed partisan primary system where voters must declare a party affiliation (Republican or Democratic) to vote in that party's primary. Candidates compete within their party, and the top vote-getter in each primary advances to the general election in November 2026. Governor and Lieutenant Governor run together as a ticket on the primary ballot.
No Runoff Elections in Illinois Primaries
Unlike some states, Illinois does not hold runoff elections for statewide or congressional primaries. The candidate with the most votes (plurality) wins the nomination, even without a majority.
What Happens After the Primary?
Primary winners become their party’s official nominees for the November general election. Live results on this page are updated in real time as counties across Illinois report vote totals.
