How Louisiana’s U.S. Senate Primary Runoff Works

Louisiana’s 2026 U.S. Senate election uses party primaries for major-party nominations. In a closed-party primary, voters generally receive a ballot based on their party affiliation, rather than all candidates appearing together on one open primary ballot.

If no candidate wins the required majority in a primary, the top candidates advance to a runoff election, where voters choose the party’s nominee for the general election.
